World Angling Championships 2013: storming Day 1 win for Drennan Team England

$

THERE were a stunning four out of five section winners for Drennan Team England in the first day of the 2013 World Angling Championships on the Zeranski Canal near Warsaw.

This means defending World Champion Sean Ashby, and indeed any of the England side, are well poised for medals individually, as the team aim for the main prize and follow-up golden achievements in recent weeks by the Under-18s and Ladies.

This is the scorecard for England on the first day:  Sean Ashby 2.420 Kg (1 point – first in section);  Steve Hemingray 4.350 (1); Des Shipp 5.575 (3); Will Raison 3.300  (1); Alan Scotthorne: 3.200 (1).

Our man in Poland, Dave Johnson, reports: ”On a venue which came to Drennan Team England like steel to a magnet, the team swept to an emphatic 7-point victory over local favourites Poland, who managed a creditable 14 points.

“England’s approach was typical of many of the canals back home, something seldom seen on the continent of Europe.

“With a 7-point cushion, it seems that only an horendous draw can rob this team of a justified victory.

“We keep our fingers crossed for a repeat performance on Sunday.”

The first day was not so successful for other home nations with Weston Tri-Cast Wales  12th, Daiwa Scotland  20th, Tubertini Ireland 29th and  Sensas Channel Islands 26th.

The Zeranski Canal hosts the 2013 World Angling Championships, where England posted a first day four out of five section wins.

World Angling Championships 2013: overall win for Drennan Team England!

DRENNAN Team England have won team gold with France second and Poland third. There was individual silver  for Steve Hemingray, in  his first World Championship, and bronze  for Alan Scotthorne, the five-times  World Champion.

Our man in Poland, Dave Johnson, reports: “It’s not often England find all the cards stacked in their favour, but the Zarenski Canal in Northern Warsaw came up with nearly a full house!

“With 7 points safely tucked away from Saturday’s dominant performance, all the team had to do was follow the yellow brick road (sorry golden brick) to the winners’ podium. And they did it in style.

“Although France made a last ditch effort to pull back a 16-point deficit, it was not enough to overhaul a jubilant Drennan Team England, who maintained their advantage with 15 points on the final day.

“France did have the satisfaction of producing the Individual World Champion, Didier Delannoy, who managed to keep a debutant Steve Hemingray at bay by 2 kg. Five-times World Champ, Alan Scotthorne, so nearly added an unprecedented sixth title to his illustrious career. All three anglers finished on the perfect 2-point score.”

England overall scoresheet was: Steve Hemingray 2 points (2 section wins, second overall on weight countback); Alan Scotthorne 2 (third overall on weight countback); Sean Ashby 3; Des Shipp 5; Will Raison 12.

Zac Brown (left) gets his big payday this summer, from Maver’s Phil Briscoe.

WHO will follow Zac Brown, who netted the match fishing scene’s £50,000 jackpot and became the third Mega ‘Match This’ Champion? It could be YOU in 2014!

Wednesday 1st January, 2014 marks the beginning of the fourth and latest chapter in the Mega ‘Match This’ story. That’s when tickets for this growing match fishing event go on sale, Angler’s Mail can confirm.

Maver, match fishing tackle firm and Match This organisers, confirmed a return to Packington Somers, Cudmore Fisheries, Partridge Lakes, Barston Lakes and, of course, Maver Larford Lakes.

They revealed: ‘The 2014 campaign also see’s repeat qualifiers at 2013 sell-out venues Decoy Lakes, Peterborough and Roy Marlow’s Glebe Fishery, Leicester. Such was the demand for tickets in 2013 for both of these venues, each will now host two qualifiers next year.

‘Maver (UK) is also proud to confirm the introduction of a brand new venue for 2014 in the popular bagging mecca that is Coleman’s Cottage, Essex, meaning that the Mega ‘Match This’ qualifiers now cater for anglers from an even wider catchment area.’

SPECTATORS are welcome to the first-ever  RiverFest final over the weekend of November 16/17 – and excitement is hotting up for anglers who will compete in river fishing’s most prestigious weekend.

The Wye at Hereford plays host to the final.

The Wye at Hereford plays host to the final.

Some 60 match anglers from all over the country will be competing to win a share of £24,000 on the River Wye at Hereford.

They will be hoping the fish-filled river – rated No.1 of venues in an Angler’s Mail report two years ago – will be back in its best shape.

The river soared during recent storms, and more autumnal rain could make it a real tester.

The  RiverFest 2013 winner will walk away with a cool £10,000, that’s the biggest prize ever for a river competition!

Daiwa reels are now added to the impressive prize pot!

Daiwa reels are now added to the impressive prize pot!

The Angling Trust announced  more sponsorship support from Daiwa Sports towards the final.

In addition to big money,  and goodie boxes from Bait-Tech for every finalist, now Daiwa has donated their latest TDR2508 reel worth £245 for the angler who catches the biggest fish over the weekend.  The section stewards will also have their chance of getting in on the action with a prize draw to win a TDM2508 reel worth £150.

Daiwa’s Robin Morley said: “We are delighted to support this excellent competition which has seen a great response from anglers all over the country in its first season. We can only see it growing in the years to come and would like to wish every competitor good luck in the final.”

Parking and entry is free for Angling Trust members to watch the final and you’ll be able to watch and meet some of the best river anglers in the country doing their stuff. There’s a path all the way along the match length and access is easy.

The draw takes place each day at 8am and the club is open to Angling Trust members from 9am. Fishing is from 10.30am until 3.30pm each day.

Cars should be parked in the field adjacent to the Hereford Rowing Club at the bottom of Greyfriars Avenue, HR4 0BE. Spectators will also have the use of the facilities and be able to get refreshments at the rowing club where there will be a bookmaker present to take bets on your fancied anglers.

Dave Harrell, the man behind the RiverFest concept, will be on hand to answer your questions and to show you his full range of DH Angling products.

RIVERFEST BOOKMAKER’S ODDS

Early odds for the first day of the two-day Riverfest festival were released by Dave Harrell. They were put together by bookie Grahame Bonnett…
